Lesson notes
English spelling does not always reveal pronunciation. Phonetics studies speech sounds; phonemic symbols represent meaningful sound contrasts. A sound is not the same as a letter: the word “ship” has four letters but three sounds. Vowels are produced without a major blockage of airflow; consonants involve some narrowing or closure. Practise listening and speaking, not only memorising symbols. Use a reputable pronunciation dictionary for the accent model required by your course.
Practice activities
- How many sounds are in “ship”?
- What is one difference between vowels and consonants?
Suggested answers
- Three sounds: /ʃ/, /ɪ/, /p/
- Vowels have relatively open airflow; consonants involve narrowing or closure.
